How to Disable Private Chat in Webex Meetings

No more gossip in class!

Cisco Webex is a video conferencing tool that lets you hold meetings, share files, and attend online classes. It provides a platform for users to communicate with each other via real-time audio and video. It also allows conversation between the participant and the host via chat.

Often students abuse this privilege by sending and receiving private messages between one another. The instructor or host is clueless about the discussions that are taking place in their class because they can only see the messages sent directly to them. No one wants this improper use of school services.

Fortunately, you can limit these conversations by preventing users from sending and receiving private messages in Webex meetings.

In an ongoing WebEx meeting (where you are the host), click the ‘Attendees’ option from the top menu bar. Then select ‘Assign Privileges…’ from the available options.

1(6)

The ‘Participant rights’ box will appear. From there, make sure the ‘Communicate’ tab is selected and then under the ‘Participants can chat: Privately with’ section, uncheck the ‘Other Participants’ box, and hit the ‘OK’ button in the lower left corner of the box.

2(5)

This will limit all private communication between other attendees and allow attendees to chat only with the host or presenter.

Removing the private chat feature completely from students should be the last resort for the instructor. It can also prevent useful conversations between students sharing thoughts about assignments. This could easily be an inconvenience more than a punishment. Often students have alternative applications available, with which they can communicate despite limitations. The bigger question is whether you want the conversation to take place inside the school-run system or outside of it.
