How to Hide Your Background During Video Calls in Zoom

If you work from home but still have to attend a video conference, you can use a virtual background in Zoom to hide your true background environment. It can add a personal touch to video chat and hide the mess behind you. Here’s how to do it.

Download, install, then open Zoom. After the application opens, select the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the window. This opens the “Settings” window.

1
In the left pane of the Settings window, select “Virtual Background.”

2
Once selected, you will see a video preview of your current environment along with the “Rotate 90 °” option in the upper-right corner of the preview.

3
Under the preview, you will find a small background selection to choose from. You can also select the boxes next to “I Have A Green Screen” and / or “Mirror My Video.” The last option will do what it says – mirror your video. If you have a green screen on your background, be sure to check that option because it will significantly improve the quality of your virtual background.

Select a virtual background from the library.

4
The background immediately appears behind you.

5
Your true background is now completely hidden.

If you are not satisfied with any background options in the library, you can use your own. Select the “Add Image or Video” button (represented by the “+” icon) in the upper right corner of the virtual background selection. From there, select “Add Picture” or “Add Video.”

6

Zoom will open File Explorer (Finder for Mac). Navigate to the location of the picture or video that you want to use, select it, then click the “Open” button.

7

The selected background will now be applied. Make sure the image you choose is high resolution so that the quality does not decrease during your video meeting.
