Find out everything about viewing Webex ARF files
Many users record meetings on Webex, for people who are not present, or to refer back to the meeting, or to use as training materials. Webex meeting recordings can have three different file types – MP4, WRF, and ARF.
ARF files are Advanced Recording Format files which are a special Webex file type. If you download ARF files to your computer, you will not be able to play them using a standard video player. What you need is a Webex Network Recording Player. Let’s have a look and see what it is.
What is an ARF file?
All Webex users, except Webex Free users, can record meetings either locally on their computer, or cloud on the Webex server. The encounters that you record to the cloud have a “.arf” extension, therefore, the name of the ARF file. This is also called Network Based Recording (NBR).
The chances of you finding ARF files are quite high. Even though you are using the Webex Meetings (WMS33.6 and later) and Events (WMS33.6 and later) sites that support the latest MP4 format, the ARF format is still the most widely used and is the default on most sites.
Although the quality is slightly lower than MP4 files, it offers a wider range of recording content. With NBR recording, which is an ARF file, you can record desktop, multiple applications, and share files. WRF recording only allows you to record one application at a time, whereas MP4 recording will not record any part of your file or panels. So it’s no surprise that the ARF file format is so popular among Webex users.
How to View ARF Files
Now, if you have a URL to an ARF file, you can simply click the link and stream online without needing a player. But if you have downloaded videos to your computer, you will need a Webex Network Recording Player to watch the videos.
You can download the player from the download page on your Webex site. Open your meeting room in a browser, and go to the ‘Downloads’ page from the navigation menu on the left. Then, look for ‘Recorders and Players’ in the download list, and click the ‘Recording and Playback’ link to go to the download page.
While Webex recommends that you download the player from the downloads section of your meeting room for optimal compatibility, if you can’t find the player on the download page, you can click here to open it.
Then, scroll down and under .ARF File Types, click on the OS you want to download the player from.
Follow the instructions in the Install Wizard to install the player on your system. After you install the player, every time you open an ARF file, it will automatically play on the Webex Network Recording Player.
You can’t edit ARF files as you can with WRF files; You can only trim the beginning and end of the file. But you can convert files to other formats and then edit them. Unlike WRF files, ARF files do not require you to download separate converter software. Webex’s Network Recorder Player also lets you convert ARF files to other formats such as WMV, SWF or MP4. You can also play the converted file on any mobile device with the appropriate software.
If you’re not familiar with Webex, your first encounter with this new file type can be a little daunting. But nothing more than that. You just need the right players on your system, and viewing these recordings will be very easy.
